Mega-Catch™ Labor Day Deals

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.  Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”  However many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday.

Whatever its origins, the first Monday in September is when workers across America have a day off to celebrate Labor Day.  Over the years it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general ‘last fling of summer’ festival.   In the northern half of the U.S. at least, the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day.  So as well as symbolising the end of summer, it also marks the start of football season, the return to school for millions of students and is one of the biggest holiday shopping weekends on the calendar.

Implement Some DIY Mosquito Control to Mark World Mosquito Day With Mega-Catch™

World Mosquito Day has become an ‘awareness day’ to remind the public about the continuing threat of malaria and other diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, but it actually marks the anniversary of one of the most important scientific discoveries in the battle against malaria and was originated by the man who made that discovery. On August 20 1897, British army doctor Ronald Ross was working in Secunderabad in India, dissecting the stomach tissue of an Anopheline mosquito known to have fed on a patient with malaria.  Ross discovered the malaria parasite and established the role of the Anopheles mosquitoes in the transmission of malaria parasites in humans.  Through further research using malarious birds, he was able to ascertain the entire life cycle of the malaria parasite, including its presence in the mosquito’s salivary glands.  Ross, credited with the discovery of the transmission of malaria by mosquitoes was honoured with a Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1902 and a knighthood in 1911. Experts warn mosquito-borne disease latest health threat to the U.S.

Global warming, climate change and international air travel have all contributed to the the latest health threat experts predict is about to hit the U.S.  Chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne disease, even more deadly than West Nile virus and carried by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Asian Tiger) mosquito has spread throughout Africa, Asia and parts of Europe, leaving a trail of outbreaks and numerous deaths in its wake.

Chikungunya virus can cause fever, rash, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, muscle and joint pain.  “The disease can be fatal.  It’s a serious disease,” Dr James Diaz of the Louisiana University Health Sciences Center recently told a meeting on airlines, airports and disease transmission (Friday, 18 Sept 2009).  He also warned that double infections are possible as the Asian tiger mosquito is also known to carry malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus (WNV).

Decreasing mosquito populations is one way of reducing the risk from West Nile, Chikungunya or any other mosquito-borne illness.  Mosquito traps interrupt the breeding cycle and decrease mosquito populations that way.  And an efficient trap that captures thousands of mosquitoes a night can all but collapse a mosquito colony over a matter of months.

Mega-Catch™ traps are highly effective because they employ a wide range of visual stimuli to attract mosquitoes.  This is particularly important in the case of daytime biters like the Asian Tiger which rely on visual cues, as well as chemical cues to find their targets.  The patent-pending, Mega-Catch™ 3000 combo lure, developed by and exclusive to Mega-Catch™, has been designed to further enhance the existing design features of all Mega-Catch™ traps so as to increase capture rates of target species like the Asian Tiger mosquito.

Mega-Catch™ Mosquito Traps effective against biting midges

Co2 trapping is one of the most effective methods of dealing to these little bloodsuckers, often referred to as the vampires of the insect world. Research has shown that biting midges, like many species of mosquito, are attracted to C02.  However it’s not the only cue they follow, they’re also attracted to light, especially UV light.  The Ultra trap by Mega-Catch™ appears to be one of the safest, most effective traps on the market, and one that combines both C02 with UV light capability.   Mega-Catch™ traps have been scientifically tested and proven to kill mosquitoes, biting midges (no-see-ums) black flies and sand flies, and more importantly, do so without the use of insecticides, fogs or sprays.  USDA entomologist, Dr Daniel Kline conducted comparison tests using Mega-Catch™ Ultra traps in the Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge, on the west coast of Florida, and recorded the capture of 10,000 biting midges just in one day.  Biting midges are prolific at this site and cause extreme annoyance to both nearby residents and tourists.

Biting midges are also known as ‘no-see-ums’ in North America, as ‘punkies’ in the Northeast; ‘five-O’s in Florida and Alabama (refers to their 5 pm biting habit), ‘pinyon gnats’ in the Southwest, and ‘moose flies’ in Canada. (more…)

Mega-Catch™ Mosquito Attractants 101

octenol-molecule2The use of Octenol attractant lures in mosquito traps has been shown to significantly increase capture rates of most mosquito species.

Octenol (1-Octen-3-ol) is a by-product of the respiration of ruminants (e.g.oxen & cattle) and is sometimes referred to as “cow’s breath”.

Mega-Catch™  Octenol lures contain minute quantities of synthetic Octenol and other specially formulated ingredients which are designed to attract mosquitoes and other biting insects including biting midges (no-see-ums), sand flies and black flies. (more…)
