Invasion of the Mega Mosquitoes

mega-mosquitoes

Super sized and with a bite to match, Mega Mosquitoes known as gallinippers, are set to invade Florida this summer where major tropical events such as Tropical Storm Debby awakened the dormant eggs.

The female gallinipper (Psorophora ciliata) feeds day and night.  It goes after people, will bite pets and even fish, out in the wild.

So prepare yourselves, this mosquito can pierce through several layers of clothing with a single bite.  Due to their sheer size and robust physique, the gallinipper  may be less susceptible to standard insect repellents.  The best way to protect against these super-sized mosquitoes is to wear bug spray with DEET and cover up as best as possible.

They are primarily found in the southeastern United States, but their range extends as far north as Ontario and Quebec, and well into the mid-west. Psorophora ciliata has also been found as far south as Argentina.  A study has shown that these notoriously aggressive mosquitoes are attracted by light.  Mosquito Traps like Mega-Catch™, that incorporate light as an attractant method, may be more successful at controlling this particular species than traps that don’t.

Great Gadgets For West Nile Season – Upgrade Your Premier XC Trap to CO2

With 241 cases of West Nile virus and four related deaths reported so far this year, the United States is experiencing the biggest spike in the mosquito-borne illness since 2004.

Because most infections occur between June and September, hitting their peak in August, ongoing preventive measures are essential.   So keep your traps running, slap on the bug spray and try and stay indoors after dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Great Gadgets – Upgrade your PREMIER XC Trap to CO2

While our traps don’t need Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to attract mosquitoes, operation of Mega-Catch’s™ patented ‘Variable Quantity Slow CO2 Gas Release System’ will boost capture rates of targeted species.  Mega-Catch™ ULTRA traps come CO2 ready, all that’s needed is a gas cylinder (sold separately).  However this summer’s brutal mosquito season, together with the re-emergence of West Nile Virus, has seen our traps literally fly off the shelves.  We are currently out of stock of ULTRA traps in Canada until next year.

The good news is, if you do have a Pro 900 PREMIER XC trap you can upgrade it to ULTRA specifications with our CO2 upgrade kit.  The upgrade kit (sold separately) converts or ‘transforms’ the PREMIER XC to top-of-the-line ULTRA trap specifications, making it Carbon Dioxide (CO2) capable.

This enables the traps to replicate a key feature of human/animal respiration by releasing or ‘exhaling’ variable amounts of CO2 into the air plume.  Use of this system is entirely optional and the trap can be run with or without the gas turned on.  However, if you are battling a challenging mosquito problem we strongly recommend that you operate your trap with CO2 as this can increase the coverage area (up from 1 acre to 1.5 acres) and capture rates by as much as 300-400%.

An ULTRA manual plus a full set of stick on badges (included in the upgrade kit) completes the transformation!

It’s not too late in the season to have a CO2 trap – limited numbers of CO2 Upgrade Kits are still available.

During West Nile season, you’ll also receive a FREE Catch Bag + FREE skirt (value $19.90) with any trap or upgrade kit purchased from our online store.  Use coupon code WESTNILE12 at checkout in the U.S. shopping cart and WESTNILEC12 in the Canadian shopping cart.

During National Mosquito Control Awareness Week June 24-30 Mosquito Proof Your Home

Mark the American Mosquito Control Association’s (AMCA) National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (June 24-30) and fight the bite in your backyard with a few simple steps including the AMCA’s recommended three D’s:

  1. DRAIN – Empty out water containers at least once a week.
  2. DRESS – Wear long sleeves, long pants and light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  3. DEFEND – Apply an approved repellent such as DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

Mosquito repellents provide excellent personal protection, however they don’t actually kill mosquitoes.

Fortunately Mega-Catch™ traps do!

Referred to as the nuclear option of mosquito control by the Wall Street Journal, Mega-Catch™ ULTRA Mosquito Traps are the ultimate weapon against mosquitoes and other biting insects.  So if you live in Florida, and more importantly Brevard County, and you visit any of the Brevard County Mosquito Control Department’s information booths during ‘mosquito week’ you will go in the draw to win one of our next generation Pro 900 ULTRA Mosquito Traps.

Special displays will be located outside Lowes and Home Depot department stores throughout the county with staff on hand to provide expert advice on how to mosquito proof your home this summer.

Asian Tiger Mosquitoes Invade New York

Known for its vicious biting habits and preference for large cities, the hardy Asian Tiger mosquito is back with a vengeance.   Typically we rely on cold winters to control mosquito populations, unfortunately an unseasonably warm winter and early spring  has brought these disease-carrying pests out in increasing numbers.

And as these urban mosquitoes readily spread, entomologists fear that Chikungunya virus, which is carried by this species, could become endemic to New York within a few years.

Laura Harrington of Cornell University estimates there is one Asian tiger mosquito for every five New Yorkers. Once that ratio increases to five insects per person, her model suggests that someone arriving in New York carrying the virus would have a 38% chance of passing it on to another person through mosquito bites. The disease could become entrenched in the city at that level of infection.

There is no vaccine or cure for this particular virus and prevention is the best and only protection for you and your family.

  1. Limit outdoor activity around dusk & dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  2. Wear long pants and shirts and spray all over with insect repellents like DEET  or PICARIDIN before leaving the house.
  3. Keep bushes trimmed and grass mown.
  4. Use screens and mosquito netting to provide skeeter-free zones in and around the home.

And more importantly – deprive mosquitoes of their favorite places like standing water, which can become potential mosquito nurseries. Females lay their eggs every three days in standing water.  They don’t need much and they’re not particular where; an inch or two that has collected in a child’s toy, a flowerpot, or old tire. Stagnant pools, birdbaths and fountains are another mosquito favorite.  Don’t forget to clear out the rain gutters too.

If you have a Mega-Catch™ trap then we definitely recommend using the Mega-Catch™ 3000 combo lure.  Incorporating Octenol and Lactic acid the lure has been specifically formulated to attract the Asian tiger mosquito.

Cyber Monday

For those who prefer to do their shopping in front of the computer, on-line shopping is a sure way to avoid store crowds.

Mosquito Trap Storage Tips

Getting ready to store your Mega-Catch™ mosquito trap for the cold winter months ahead?  Remember a little bit of maintenance now will ensure a longer life for your trap as well as ensuring it is in peak condition and ready for the next mosquito massacre come spring (or when temperatures average 50°F).

Tips for Maintaining and Storing Your Trap over Winter
Instructions:

  1. Turn off your Mega-Catch™ Trap and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Turn off and disconnect the regulator from the C02 cylinder (Ultra).  To ensure that insects don’t nest in your C02 system during the off-season place the regulator in a sealed bag, and place some electrical tape or similar over the end of the gas line (attached to the rear of the trap).
  3. Remove the skirt (Ultra & Premier) and wipe down the outside of the trap with clean soapy water and a damp cloth.
  4. Open your trap using a phillips screwdriver (Ultra & Premier)    and again, using warm soapy water, clean the internal plates, heated reflective surface and fan, then allow to dry thoroughly.  (Step by step guide in the Operation manual or download from http://www.megacatch.com/manuals.html).
  5. Using a small sponge or toothbrush and warm soapy water, reach into the trap (Alpha) and carefully clean the inside casing of the fan and fan blades.
  6. Remove and discard any opened attractant lures – they’re only effective for 30 days.
  7. Remove and clean the mesh catch bag – pollen, dust and dirt can prohibit airflow and prevent your trap from working efficiently.  If the catch bag is torn or damaged in any way, remove and discard. Start next season with a fresh mesh bag.
  8. To extend the life of your trap, store it in a garage or shed, protected from the elements and extreme cold.
  9. Mid-way through winter, turn on your trap and let it run for a day.  This will keep the timer battery charged (Ultra & Premier) and the fan moving (Alpha, Ultra & Premier).
